11.5L PEAT-FREE COIR COMPOST
For Peat’s Sake! Is an eco and sustainable company that wants to put an end to peat moss harvesting. Peat moss is a very common ingredient for houseplant potting mixes however peat is not a renewable resource. Enter coconut coir! Coconut coir is harvested from the husk of a coconut and is usually the part of the coconut that gets discarded once the delicious drink inside has been extracted. Coconut coir is better for the environment and it means we can avoid touching and destroying our bogs which help to hold in CO2 and stop it from being released into the air. For Peat’s Sake and Quirky Plants have the exact same message and that is to leave our bogs alone and to start using more sustainable materials to keep our plants happy and healthy.
This size block should be enough mud to fill Two Medium (14cm) sized pots.
WHAT IS ECO COIR COMPOST?
This product is from ‘For Peat’s Sake’ and is made of dehydrated coconut coir. All you need to do is add water to your block of coconut coir and you will have approximately 11.5 litres of mix. The product is 100% peat fee and can be used for houseplants and indoor vegetables.
Each block is 100% coconut husk and has a healthy air to water ratio to encourage roots to grow.
The coconut coir is free of artificial fertiliser so once your plants are repotted they will need to be fertilised once a month from March-September to make sure they get the right amount of nutrients.
TIPS FROM CHARLOTTE THE PLANT DOCTOR
Repotting your plant:
Some indoor plants prefer to be root bound and can spend 2-3 years in the same nursery pot. The best way to know if your plant needs repotting is by checking the bottom of the nursery pot for large rooting sticking out of the holes. This is a sign that your plant is ready for a bigger home. When repotting only go up 1-2cm bigger than the originally nursery pot. If you place a plant in a nursery pot that is too large, your plant may fail to thrive.
Creating the perfect potting mix:
I recommend using 60% coconut coir with a blend of 20% bark and 20% perlite to make the perfect potting mix. Once you’ve made up your mix I would suggest placing a handful into a nursery pot and check that the water is free flowing. There must be adequate drainage before your plant gets potted. Remember any overly wet or soggy soil will rot the roots of all houseplants.
WHERE DOES THE COCO COIR COME FROM?
The Coconut coir blocks are imported and packaged by 'For Peat Sake'. Their supplier is based in Sri Lanka. They are ISO9001 and ISO14001 certified, they recycle water used during manufacturing, often use biodegradable packaging, support LEAF and are members of Sedex. All of these policies and certifications ensure a strict, high standard of manufacturing which protects the environment.
As for social sustainability, they have a strict no child labour policy, set working house with regular rest periods, and supervisors continuously ensuring health and safety measures are always met. They provide a wage that is above the industry average, a healthcare scheme, meals at work and transport. They also support their local temple through maintenance and community events, and have sponsored a local orphanage since 2005, providing food, educational materials, maintenance, as well as the opportunity for work experience when orphans reach 18 years old.
The product is simply 100% coconut husk (the hairy bit!). The rest of the coconut is used in the food and cosmetics industries, as well as to make products such as ropes and brushes, meaning nothing goes to waste. Coconuts are a renewable resource, and are harvested on average every 45 days. Unlike peat, which takes centuries to develop.
