ABOUT OUR BOSTON FERN

Well hello there, my name’s Hamish, aka the Nephrolepis exaltata. It’s okay if you can’t pronounce my Latin name - I’m actually happier being called the Boston fern or the sword fern. My ruffled foliage might look like I’ve just stepped off the plane after a week in the humidity of the Caribbean, but my bright and bouncy fronds are guaranteed to bring sunshine and happiness into your home.

I’ve been grown and cultivated all over the world and I can be found in many humid climates such as South America, the Caribbean and Polynesia. As I’m more commonly found in swamps, jungles and darker forests, the key to keeping me happy is placing me in a medium light away from any bright windows.

Happy-go-lucky, I’ll brighten up even the darkest of rooms with my feather-like, evergreen foliage. I’m known as one of the easiest of the fern family to look after, so you can look forward to my elegant fronds bringing light to your life for years to come.

Small height (including nursery pot)25-30cm; pot diameter 12cm.

Big height (including nursery pot)60-65cm; pot diameter 20cm.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to folklore, a Boston fern found in the wild is believed to indicate that there are fairies living nearby.

Hamish’s full foliage is gorgeous and will certainly boost your mood every time you look at him.

QUICK BOSTON FERN PLANT CARE

Hamish is easy to care for and will thrive in medium light and high humidity levels.

LIGHTING

I prefer medium light but can tolerate lower lighting conditions.

WATERING

Keep my soil moist but not soggy. I will protest if my soil dries out too much.

HUMIDITY

I need very high levels of humidity to thrive, so the bathroom is the best place for me. Find out how to increase humidity in your home here.

FERTILISER

I prefer very little fertiliser. Use a diluted fertiliser once every few months to avoid burning my roots or drying out my foliage.

THINGS WE ALWAYS GET ASKED

Are Boston ferns easy to care for?

Boston fern are easy to care for if given high levels of humidity and consistently moist soil. They come from the most humid parts of the world and are sensitive to dry air. Most people place their ferns in bathrooms or next to a humidifier to help their foliage stay fresh and free from crispy edges.

Where should I place my Boston fern?

The bathroom is the best place for your fern providing there isn’t too much direct sunlight. Boston ferns do not need a lot of sun to thrive so placing your fern at least a metre away from any window will help avoid burning the beautiful fronds. If Hamish is placed near a window, use Drake, Roger and Monty to shelter him from any harsh sunlight.

How often should you water a Boston fern?

Keep the soil consistently moist and never let the soil dry out. In the summer this could mean watering your fern two to three times a week and in the winter once every seven or eight days. It is always good to check the soil every four days to make sure it is not drying out. Little and often amounts of water will keep Hamish the potted fern happy.
